St. Thomas flooding displaces residents in Jamaica

Heavy rainfall in Jamaica has triggered significant flooding, particularly impacting the parish of St. Thomas. The Ministry of Labour and Social Security (MLSS) reports that 54 homes have been inundated, leading to the displacement of residents. Currently, 13 individuals have been evacuated to emergency shelters where they are receiving essential supplies and care.

The Meteorological Service of Jamaica has upgraded a flash flood watch to a flash flood warning for low-lying and flood-prone areas, including St. Mary, Portland, St. Thomas, Kingston, and St. Andrew. A broad trough across the western Caribbean is driving unstable weather, producing moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms.

Authorities have warned of potential landslides due to high soil saturation and advised motorists and pedestrians to avoid crossing flooded roadways. Marine interests are also cautioned as sea conditions continue to deteriorate in areas affected by thunderstorms.
