Söğüt, Turkey revives 530‑year‑old vakıf circumcision tradition
In the district of Söğüt, Bilecik Province, a traditional circumcision ceremony was held to commemorate a 530‑year‑old Ottoman vakıf tradition established by Sultan II Bayezid. The event, organized under the charitable conditions set out in the original vakıf deed, featured prayers, communal meals and photo‑opportunities, highlighting the continuity of cultural and social solidarity.
Local officials attended, including Kaymakam Esra Polat, Mayor Ferhat Durgut, and Bursa Vakıflar regional director Haluk Yıldız. Mayor Durgut said, “Söğüt Municipality will continue to support activities that preserve our cultural and spiritual values and strengthen community solidarity.” The ceremony underscored the enduring Ottoman heritage of charitable giving and communal bonding.
