Staatsbosbeheer hosts summer walk at Aekingerzand; Castle Hernen offers kids forest tours in the Netherlands
Staatsbosbeheer will organize a summer evening walk on 30 July 2026 across the Aekingerzand, the largest drifting sand area in northern Netherlands. Participants will learn about the area's formation, distinctive wildlife and the historical re‑forestation efforts that stabilized the dunes. The walk runs from 19:30 to 21:30, costs €9.50 (children €6) and requires prior registration.
At the same time, the forest ranger of Castle Hernen will lead guided walks for children on Thursdays during the school‑summer holidays. The activities, scheduled for 30 July, 6 August and 13 August 2026, combine a castle visit with a nature trail, riddles and medieval‑style games. Admission is €13.50 for adults and €9.75 for children, with additional discounts for certain card‑holders. Both programmes aim to engage the public with local nature and heritage.
