Stabio–Swiss Border Trail Highlights 13.5 km of Historic Cippi

A 13.5‑kilometre walking route runs from the Italian town of Stabio along the frontier with the Swiss canton of Ticino. Created by the Archivio della memoria di Stabio with municipal support, the trail links twelve historic stone markers (cippi) that were installed after the 1754 treaty between Austria and the Swiss Confederation. The markers, some dating to the sixteenth century, illustrate the evolution of the border, old customs posts, and episodes of smuggling and military patrols.

Further north, a roughly 40‑kilometre footpath follows the Ticino River from Pavia to the Piedmont border. The route passes a series of medieval river villages, such as Travacò Siccomario, and showcases historic hydraulic structures built under the Sforza administration. Hikers encounter preserved rural architecture, riparian vegetation and the same river that defines the natural corridor between Lombardy and the Swiss border.
