Stablecoin remittances offer 84% cost savings over traditional transfers

A report from stablecoin payments network Borderless.xyz indicates that stablecoin-funded remittances are significantly cheaper than traditional money transfers. The report finds a median fee of 1% for stablecoin transactions, compared to a 6.36% average for traditional remittances based on World Bank data. This represents a cost reduction of approximately 84%.

Savings are particularly notable in emerging markets. In Sub-Saharan Africa, stablecoin remittance costs were recorded at 2.9% versus an 8.46% benchmark for traditional methods. In Latin America, stablecoin costs averaged 1.25% compared to 5.64% for conventional transfers.

The report also highlights efficiencies in business payments and settlement speeds. For a $10,000 transfer to the eurozone, stablecoin-funded routes can cost as little as $26, whereas traditional international bank wires typically range between $135 and $150. Additionally, stablecoin payouts can reach local bank accounts rapidly; in Brazil, payouts through the PIX network reached a median settlement time of two minutes, while Mexico’s SPEI network averaged three minutes.
