Stablecoin DeFi deposits reach $24 billion amid regulatory scrutiny

Stablecoin deposits within decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols have reached $24 billion, marking a 560.8% increase over the last three years. Data from Token Terminal indicates that users are increasingly moving stablecoins from simple holding positions into lending protocols to earn yield. USDC leads these deposits with a 38.2% share ($9.2 billion), followed by Tether (USDT) at 20.3% ($4.9 billion) and USDe at 9.0% ($2.2 billion).

Liquidity is heavily concentrated in a few major lending platforms. Aave V3 and Morpho Blue together account for approximately 67.7% of tracked deposits. While Aave utilizes a pooled-liquidity approach, Morpho Blue has grown through isolated lending markets and integrations with consumer-facing applications, such as those powered by Coinbase.

This growth occurs alongside tightening regulatory oversight in the United States. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) recently issued a final rule preserving the prohibition on payment stablecoin issuers paying interest or yield solely for holding tokens. Additionally, the Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) has projected that the widespread adoption of payment stablecoins could potentially reduce community bank lending by as much as $850 billion.
