Stade removes parking spaces to preserve historic Luther Oak

The city of Stade has removed five paved parking spaces on Eisenbahnstraße to protect the Luther Oak, a prominent tree planted in 1883. The decision aims to ensure the long-term health of the 140-year-old tree by allowing its root system more space to absorb water and nutrients.

Previously, the expanding roots had begun to lift the pavement, creating potential tripping hazards. The tree had also faced health concerns due to a fungal infection, though recent sonic tomography indicated the damage was less severe than initially feared. To support the tree, officials have provided a specialized nutrient solution and thinned its crown.
