Stade youth‑care centre shooting kills six, sparks safety review

On Monday, 29 June 2026, a 45‑year‑old man opened fire at a youth‑care facility in Stade, Lower Saxony, killing six people, among them three employees of the regional youth office from Hannover. The suspect, who fled the scene, was apprehended by police shortly thereafter. Investigators are examining a possible motive linked to a custody dispute over the man's three‑month‑old daughter.

The attack shocked the community and prompted the Lower Saxony Ministry of Social Affairs to acknowledge that “absolute security” cannot be guaranteed in social work. The ministry said safety concepts must be re‑examined and pledged support for staff affected by the tragedy. The victim Lena Giese’s father, stadium announcer Matthias Giese, publicly mourned his daughter, describing the loss as “unfathomably painful.”
