Stadler unveils EURO DuFour locomotive for SBB Cargo
Stadler has unveiled the first EURO DuFour locomotive for SBB Cargo at the InnoTrans trade fair in Berlin. Developed just two years after the initial contract was signed, the locomotive marks Stadler’s entry into the four-axle multi-system locomotive segment.
Designed to modernize freight transport, the EURO DuFour aims to match the technological impact of the Re 460 passenger locomotive. Key technical specifications include a power output of up to 7 MW in electric traction and a weight of 80 tons. The locomotive offers a 15% reduction in energy consumption and approximately 20% lower infrastructure wear due to an improved chassis designed for the curves of the Swiss rail network.
SBB Cargo has ordered 36 units, with an option for an additional 96. Of the initial order, 22 locomotives will be equipped with battery modules to allow movement on non-electrified tracks. The units are manufactured at Stadler’s plant in Valencia, Spain, and are scheduled to undergo testing at the Railway Research Institute in Velim, Czech Republic, later this year.
