Stadler unveils FLIRT Nordic Express for Norwegian railways
Swiss manufacturer Stadler has showcased the FLIRT Nordic Express at the InnoTrans exhibition in Berlin. The new train model is specifically designed for long-distance travel in Norway and is intended to address current locomotive shortages on routes such as the Nordlandsbanen.
Norway has ordered 17 of these new trains for four major routes: Bergensbanen, Sørlandsbanen, Dovrebanen, and Nordlandsbanen. The trains are engineered to withstand extreme Norwegian climates, with operating capabilities ranging from -40 to +35 degrees Celsius. They will feature enhanced passenger amenities, including sleeping compartments, a larger bistro car, and specialized modules for games or work.
The first of these new trainsets are expected to enter service on the Bergen Line by 2028. Depending on the specific route, the trains will be equipped with either electric or hybrid (electric/diesel) propulsion to accommodate non-electrified sections of the network.
