Stadtbergen begins construction of new peace memorial

Construction has officially begun on a new peace memorial at the St. Nikolaus Church in Stadtbergen. The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by local officials, including Mayors Paulus Metz and Michael Smischek, along with representatives from the Catholic Church, the Soldiers and Veterans Association, and local historians.

The project aims to relocate the existing memorial for the victims of the First and Second World Wars, which previously stood in front of the former parish hall. This move was necessitated by the conversion of the hall into a childcare facility, making the previous site unsuitable for a memorial.

The new memorial will be divided into several sections. The central area, located on the northwest church forecourt near the cemetery, will integrate the equestrian statue of Saint George with inscriptions and the names of those fallen in the First World War. Additionally, a ‘Way of Remembrance’ will circle the church, featuring stone markers that list the victims of the Second World War.
