Stahnsdorf plans rock musician quarter with new street names

The municipality of Stahnsdorf, located south of Berlin, plans to establish a rock musician quarter by naming nine streets in a new residential development after legends of rock 'n' roll.

Mayor Bernd Albers proposed the initiative to increase diversity and combat the monotony of traditional street names. While the town already features a composers' quarter with names like Beethoven and Bach, this new project aims to include modern music icons. Albers noted that the selection deliberately includes many women to address their historical underrepresentation in street naming.

The proposed names include Debbie Harry, Madonna Ciccone, Elvis Presley, David Bowie, Annie Lennox, Freddie Mercury, Tina Turner, John Lennon, and Aretha Franklin. While names like Presley, Lennon, and Mercury already exist as street names elsewhere in Germany, the municipality noted that the five female artists and Bowie do not currently have streets named after them in the region.
