Stair climbing linked to 39% lower risk of heart-related death

A new study suggests that a simple lifestyle change—choosing stairs over elevators—can significantly reduce the risk of mortality. Research analyzing data from nine studies involving nearly 500,000 participants found that individuals who frequently climb stairs have a 39% lower risk of dying from heart-related issues and a 24% lower risk of death from any cause compared to those who do not.

Experts highlight the concept of ‘micro-workouts’ or ‘exercise snacks’ as a practical way to increase physical activity without dedicated gym sessions. Researchers indicate that adding as little as six flights of stairs (approximately 60-70 stairs), which takes less than three minutes, can decrease heart disease risk. Cardiologists note that short, one- to two-minute bursts of movement throughout the day can accumulate to provide cardiovascular benefits.
