Stair-Climbing Linked to Longevity and Fall Prevention for Seniors
Health experts highlight that climbing stairs offers greater muscular work than walking, strengthening the quadriceps, glutes and calves, which helps maintain balance and reduces fall risk for people over 60. The activity also boosts cardiovascular health, lowers blood pressure, improves cholesterol and can diminish the likelihood of heart disease, type‑2 diabetes, hypertension, certain cancers and dementia.
Endocrinologist Dr. Oscar Rosero calls stairs “the best free gym” available 24 hours a day. Cardiologist Diego Iván Alarcón says people who use stairs live longer and better. Trainer Álvaro Puche notes the micro‑impact of each step strengthens bones and the core. Dr. Daniel López Rosetti adds that muscle releases myokines that act as systemic protectors, describing muscle as “one of the organs of longevity.” Regularly climbing a few flights daily is presented as a simple habit with substantial health returns.
