Stair climbing linked to lower cardiovascular mortality risk

A large-scale meta-analysis involving over 480,000 participants has linked regular stair climbing to significant improvements in cardiovascular health and longevity. The research indicates that climbing stairs can reduce the risk of death from all causes by 24% and mortality from cardiovascular diseases by 39%.

Experts suggest that a manageable daily dose, such as climbing approximately six floors or 60–70 steps, can capture much of these benefits. This activity acts as a form of accidental high-intensity interval training (HIIT) by providing short bursts of intense effort that elevate heart rate and oxygen consumption.

In addition to stair climbing, other daily activities like brisk walking are highlighted for their health benefits. Research from the University of Oklahoma suggests that 30 minutes of brisk walking five days a week can reduce risks for type 2 diabetes, dementia, and premature death.

Medical professionals note that while shortness of breath during stair climbing is a common physiological response to increased oxygen demand, individuals should monitor for warning signs such as chest pain or prolonged recovery times to distinguish between normal exertion and potential health issues.
