Stair climbing provides health benefits through exercise snacks

Stair climbing serves as a form of physical activity that can improve health when integrated into daily routines. According to the Physical Activity Guide for the Brazilian Population, climbing stairs is categorized alongside walking, cycling, and dancing as a way to increase energy expenditure compared to rest.

While climbing stairs in a building or station is considered physical activity, a planned, structured, and repetitive session of climbing stairs can be classified as physical exercise. The movement requires large muscle groups in the legs and hips to work against gravity, which increases cardiovascular demand and heart rate.

Research into “exercise snacks” suggests that short, vigorous bursts of movement distributed throughout the day can improve cardiorespiratory fitness. Rather than performing one long session, performing small bouts of stair climbing—such as a few flights in the morning, at lunch, and at the end of the workday—can accumulate significant benefits. A study involving sedentary young adults showed that climbing 60 steps vigorously three times a day, three times a week, led to measurable improvements in cardiorespiratory capacity after six weeks.
