Stair climbing test can indicate heart health

Spanish cardiologists have identified a simple 60-second stair-climbing test that can serve as an indicator of heart and lung health. By measuring the time it takes to climb approximately 60 steps (four floors) at a brisk pace, individuals can estimate their cardiorespiratory fitness.

Research comparing this method to treadmill stress tests shows that those who complete the climb in under 45 seconds generally possess good fitness levels. Conversely, individuals taking more than 90 seconds are more likely to show signs of impaired heart function.

Beyond testing, stair climbing serves as an accessible form of training. Experts suggest making stair climbing a habit and performing four to six brisk climbs twice a week to improve conditioning.
