Stamatios Gardeilis volunteers as Western Attica wildfire razes last forest in Athens region

Greek actor Stamatios Gardeilis joined volunteer fire‑fighting teams in Western Attica as a large blaze swept through the area. He reported that the fire completely consumed the Porto Germeño forest, the last significant woodland in the Attica region, and warned that flames were threatening the nearby settlement of Agios Nektarios.

Gardeilis said the forest lacked any fire‑break zones, making it especially vulnerable. While his own home in the nearby village of Kriyo Pigadi, Boeotia, escaped damage, he emphasized that the loss of the forest and the surrounding ecosystem was a far greater tragedy, describing the scene as a “death” for the local wildlife and community.

He expressed deep emotional distress for the residents and the ecological impact, calling the event a profound loss for Attica.
