Stamatis Gonidis sparks controversy after welcoming Ilias Kasidiaris

Singer Stamatis Gonidis has sparked significant controversy following a public welcome offered to Ilias Kasidiaris at a nightclub on October 3, 2026. Kasidiaris, a former Golden Dawn lawmaker convicted of leading a criminal organization, attended the venue to celebrate his recent release from prison.

During his performance, Gonidis addressed Kasidiaris from the stage, calling him a ‘friend’ and thanking him for choosing his establishment to celebrate his release. The interaction drew sharp criticism from songwriter Nikos Moraitis, who posted on social media that Gonidis had ‘died in the conscience of every non-fascist,’ stating that while he does not care about an artist's political leaning, fascism is an absolute red line.

Reports indicate that while Kasidiaris initially sat discreetly, the atmosphere shifted when Gonidis made his public remarks. Some members of the audience reportedly cheered the interaction, while others expressed disapproval.
