Stan Wawrinka granted US Open wild card for final Grand Slam
Tennis veteran Stan Wawrinka will compete in the US Open after receiving a last-minute wild card entry. The 41-year-old Swiss player, who is retiring at the end of this year, had previously believed his Grand Slam career was concluding without a final appearance in New York.
Wawrinka revealed that he was in the Swiss mountains when he received the news that the wild card originally intended for American player Patrick Kypson had been reassigned to him following Kypson's withdrawal due to injury. Wawrinka described the experience as a “roller coaster,” noting that he had already accepted the possibility of not playing the tournament.
Preparing for his first-round match against Italy’s Matteo Berrettini, Wawrinka has returned to New York and practiced with tournament favorite Carlos Alcaraz. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play his final Grand Slam on the site of his 2016 championship victory.
