Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon likely to remain single-day event in 2027

The Hong Kong Athletics Association is considering ways to expand the scale of the 2027 Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon to meet surging public demand. While the association previously researched the possibility of hosting the event over two days—similar to the London Marathon's upcoming two-day format—preliminary studies suggest the race will likely remain a single-day event on January 17, 2027.

The decision to maintain a single-day format is primarily driven by concerns regarding traffic disruptions. Authorities noted that consecutive days of large-scale road closures could negatively impact local businesses and commuters who work on Saturdays. Additionally, existing course bottlenecks, such as the Western Harbour Crossing exit, make designing alternative routes difficult.

To address the high number of unsuccessful applicants, organizers plan to increase the total number of participants by several thousand next year. Most of these additional slots will be allocated to the half-marathon and 10km categories, while the full marathon capacity is expected to remain unchanged. Sponsors have also reportedly pressured the association to increase capacity to satisfy the growing community of runners.
