Standard Liège and Charleroi sanctioned after derby violence

The Disciplinary Council for Professional Football has imposed heavy sanctions on Standard Liège and Sporting Charleroi following violent incidents during last season’s ‘Walloon derby’. The disciplinary actions stem from the use of pyrotechnics, the throwing of objects, and a pitch invasion by Standard supporters during a match in Charleroi.

As part of the ruling, both clubs are required to play one home match without fans. For Standard Liège, this effective sanction will be applied to their upcoming confrontation with Charleroi in October. Additionally, Standard Liège faces a fine of 10,000 euros and must play a home match against Antwerp with specific spectator sections (E3, D3, and F3) closed.

The council noted that while Standard Liège had taken some preventative measures, they were insufficient given the severity of the facts. Both clubs face further suspended penalties should additional misconduct occur during the current season.
