Standard Liège director Marc Wilmots disputes controversial penalty decision

Controversy has erupted in Belgian football following two penalty decisions during the KV Mechelen versus Standard Liège match. The dispute centers on a late penalty awarded in the 102nd minute after contact between Standard goalkeeper Matthieu Epolo and attacker Adeshina Ayodele.

Refereeing chief Jonathan Lardot defended the decision, stating that Epolo did not play the ball with sufficient control. Lardot argued that while the goalkeeper may have touched the ball, the action was not a controlled play, which justified the VAR intervention and subsequent penalty. Although Lardot acknowledged the three-minute VAR review was lengthy, he maintained the decision was correct.

Standard Liège sporting director Marc Wilmots has strongly rejected this explanation, labeling the decision ‘hallucinant’ (hallucinatory). Wilmots criticized Lardot’s interpretation, questioning how a goalkeeper rushing at full speed could be deemed to have played the ball in a controlled manner. Wilmots expressed a sense of being ‘bestolen’ (robbed) and accused the officiating leadership of a lack of football insight.
