Standard Liège vs Charleroi refereeing controversy sparks backlash
A controversial refereeing decision during the Walloon derby between Standard Liège and Charleroi has sparked intense criticism from football pundits. During stoppage time, with Standard trailing 0-1, Aurélien Scheidler appeared to step on the foot of Salieu Drammeh inside the penalty area. Despite appeals, referee Simon Bourdeaud'hui did not award a penalty, and the VAR failed to intervene.
Former players and analysts have reacted sharply to the incident. Philippe Albert criticized the officiating, stating, “Either it is unfairness, or it is incompetence. And I hope it is incompetence.”
In the podcast ‘Ongefilterd’, Stijn Stijnen and Olivier Deschacht also condemned the decision. Stijnen questioned how three officials watching a screen could miss the contact, while Deschacht was even more severe, suggesting that even a low-level amateur referee would have seen the foul. Deschacht went as far as to say, “You have to suspend all three of them.” Former international Radja Nainggolan also expressed astonishment at the missed call.
