Standard Lithium targets 2029 production for Arkansas lithium project

Standard Lithium is advancing its South West Arkansas lithium project located in the Smackover Formation. The company aims to reach a final investment decision by the end of 2026, with the goal of beginning commercial production in 2029.

The project, which is a joint venture with Equinor (55% and 45% economic interests respectively), is designed to initially produce 22,500 metric tons of lithium carbonate annually, with potential to expand to 45,000 tons. The estimated capital cost for the project is $1.5 billion, with an expected operating life exceeding 20 years.

Standard Lithium has already completed a definitive feasibility study and the federal National Environmental Policy Act review process. The company has secured offtake agreements with Trafigura and LG Energy Solution and intends to pursue more than $1 billion in non-recourse project financing. Despite these milestones, market analysts have noted investor concerns regarding the financing gap required to reach full commercial operations.
