Standing desks and hourly movement breaks boost office health

Adjustable-height sit‑stand desks are promoted as a way to reduce the health risks of prolonged sitting. Manufacturers such as Actiu market models that can be raised or lowered in seconds, citing research that regular posture changes lessen low‑back pain and improve circulation.

A large field study by Columbia University’s medical centre, involving 19,342 adults, tested brief five‑minute movement breaks each hour. Participants who took breaks every 30 or 60 minutes reported lower fatigue, better mood and no loss of work performance. The findings, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, suggest that hourly activity interruptions are both feasible and effective as a public‑health strategy to counter sedentary‑office habits.
