Stanford researchers achieve speech‑restoring brain‑computer interface for paralyzed patients

Artificial intelligence and brain‑computer interfaces (BCI) are enabling people with severe paralysis to convert thoughts into words. Clinical trials have shown that BCIs can restore communication for patients who have lost speech due to ALS, stroke, spinal injuries or other neuromuscular disorders while preserving cognitive function.

A team at Stanford University implanted micro‑electrodes in the cerebral cortex of an advanced ALS patient. The system translated neural activity related to speech into text and synthetic voice at roughly 62 words per minute, far exceeding earlier performance levels. The technology combines implanted electrodes, AI algorithms that decode neural signals, and computer software that generates text, synthetic speech, or digital facial expressions. Results published in *Nature* and *Nature Neuroscience* demonstrate that the approach is moving from experimental promise to practical medical application.
