Stanford retires Katie Meyer’s No. 19 jersey

Stanford University retired the No. 19 jersey to honor the legacy of former standout goalkeeper Katie Meyer during a women’s soccer match against USC. Meyer, a two-time team captain who helped lead the Cardinal to a 2019 national championship, passed away in March 2022.

The ceremony included the presentation of framed jerseys to Meyer’s parents and the unveiling of a No. 19 decal at Cagan Stadium. The event also served as the university’s annual Mental Health Awareness match, featuring the distribution of “Mental Health Matters” hats to promote support for those struggling with mental health issues.

Following the pregame tribute, the Stanford women’s soccer team played to a 2-2 draw against USC. Despite a strong second-half performance and a shot advantage, the Cardinal was unable to secure a win after USC equalized following a second-half goal by Peyton Nakagawara.
