Stanford study: Extreme heat poses higher risk to elderly
A new study published in The Lancet Planetary Health reveals that older adults face significantly higher risks from extreme heat than previously estimated. Researchers from Stanford University found that previous climate models often underestimated vulnerability by applying heat tolerance thresholds derived from healthy young adults to all age groups.
As global temperatures rise, older individuals (aged 60 and over) are more susceptible to uncompensable heat stress (UHS), a condition where the body can no longer regulate its internal temperature. This vulnerability is driven by physiological changes, including reduced sweating capacity, decreased cardiovascular efficiency, and limited blood vessel dilation.
The study highlights a growing demographic crisis: the global population of people aged 60 and over is projected to reach 2.1 billion by 2050. Furthermore, for every 1°C increase in global temperature, an additional 1 billion people may be exposed to at least 180 hours of extreme heat annually.
Recent heatwaves in Europe have already demonstrated these risks. Data from Santé publique France indicated over 5,700 excess deaths during a recent heatwave, with seniors accounting for a significant portion. Similarly, the UK Health Security Agency reported nearly 2,900 heat-related deaths during recent temperature spikes.
