Stanford University graduate accuses school of mishandling sexual assault case
A Stanford University graduate has released a first-person account through The Stanford Daily, accusing the university and law enforcement of failing to provide accountability following a sexual assault in her dorm room when she was 19.
The survivor, who has remained anonymous, alleges that a Title IX investigation lasted two years and resulted in a two-year suspension for the individual found responsible, rather than expulsion. She noted that the perpetrator remains eligible to complete his degree this fall. The survivor stated that the prolonged proceedings caused her to miss academic opportunities, such as studying abroad, and forced her to avoid shared classes due to fear.
In addition to university delays, the account details complications within the criminal investigation. She reported that Stanford campus police waited four months to contact witnesses and that conflicting information was provided by the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office and campus police regarding the status of the case. It was later discovered that an initial submission to prosecutors was incomplete and missing witness reports.
