Stanford University removes AI-generated marching band image

Stanford University has removed an AI-generated image from its Campus Center construction website following backlash from students. The image depicted an all-white, all-male marching band wearing red blazers, white shirts, and fedoras performing on White Plaza.

Leaders of the Leland Stanford Junior University Marching Band expressed frustration, noting that the depiction contradicted the organization’s active efforts to recruit women and students of color. Band conductor Sadie Taylor and drum major Jose Serrano filed a formal complaint, arguing that the university should have used authentic photographs which were already available rather than using an AI-generated version that misrepresented the group.

Serrano also raised concerns regarding the use of AI to generate human figures that resemble real students without their consent. The university replaced the controversial image with an architectural rendering shortly after the complaint was lodged.
