Stanislav Maroja, Zadar intellectual and chess official, dies at 85

Stanislav Maroja, a prominent intellectual, chess player, and columnist from Zadar, has passed away at the age of 85. Born in Novigrad, Maroja held various professional roles within the Zadar city administration, including serving as the head of the Department of Culture for the City of Zadar.

In addition to his administrative career, Maroja was a noted aphorist and author of several books. He was also a significant figure in the regional chess community, serving as the president of the Zadar County Chess Association, for which he received a lifetime achievement award in 2023. His funeral is scheduled to take place in his hometown of Novigrad on Tuesday, September 1.
