Stantec selected for Toronto wet weather treatment facility

The City of Toronto has selected Stantec to provide design and construction administration services for a new High Rate Treatment Facility (HRTF). Located at the Ashbridges Bay Wastewater Treatment Plant, the facility will have a capacity of 600 million litres per day.

The HRTF is a critical component of the Don River and Central Waterfront Wet Weather Flow System, which is the largest wet weather flow management program in Toronto’s history. The system utilizes a network of tunnels and infrastructure to capture combined sewage and stormwater during heavy rainfall, preventing untreated overflows from entering local waterways.

Once operational, the facility aims to improve water quality in the Lower Don River, Taylor-Massey Creek, and Toronto’s Inner Harbour. The project is intended to enhance environmental conditions, support recreational opportunities, and strengthen the city’s resilience to increasingly severe rainfall events caused by climate change.
