Stanzin Tsangyang becomes first female Army officer from Kargil

Stanzin Tsangyang has become the first woman Army officer from the Kargil district of Ladakh to be commissioned into the Indian Army. The 23-year-old, originally from the remote mountains of Zanskar, participated in the passing-out parade at the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai.

Tsangyang, a mechanical engineering graduate from Tezpur University, discovered the path to the officer cadre through the National Cadet Corps (NCC). She noted that while many from Ladakh serve in the military, there has historically been a lack of guidance for those aspiring to the officer rank due to limited vacancies and a difficult selection process.

During the ceremony, Tsangyang was among a group of 342 newly inducted officers, including 29 women. Her achievement marks a significant milestone for her home region, where she aims to serve as a role model for local youth.
