Star Citizen developers face backlash after buggy livestream
Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) faced significant community backlash following a disastrous livestream intended to demonstrate the intended gameplay experience of Star Citizen. The broadcast, which utilized an internal build on private servers to avoid the performance issues seen in the Public Test Universe, was plagued by foundational technical glitches.
During the Siege of Orison mission, developers encountered persistent bugs including failures in weapon equipping, unreliable weapon swapping, and broken inventory systems. Despite the controlled environment with only four players and no network latency, the technical issues were pervasive. The stream ended awkwardly when a staff member interrupted the hosts on camera to signal the end of the session.
The event has intensified scrutiny of the project, which has been in development for approximately 15 years and has raised over one billion dollars through crowdfunding. While the developers attempted to frame the build as the game as it is meant to work, the visible instability has led to increased player distrust and criticism regarding the project's progress toward a full 1.0 release.
