Star Meat Delivery Inc. recalls 167,000 pounds of uninspected meat
Star Meat Delivery Inc., based in Lucama, North Carolina, is recalling more than 167,000 pounds of raw pork, beef, and goat products across the United States. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued a Class I recall, its highest health risk designation, after discovering the meat was produced without required federal inspection.
The products bore falsified USDA inspection labels featuring establishment number EST. 1363, a number that does not have a federal grant of inspection. The meat was distributed in bulk to A&D Foods, a Georgia-based distributor, which then supplied various retail stores and restaurants nationwide. Affected items include ground pork, chorizo, pork chops, ribs, beef ribs, oxtail, and various goat cuts.
While the USDA warned that uninspected meat could contain harmful bacteria, undeclared allergens, or other contaminants, there have been no confirmed reports of illness or injury related to the consumption of these products. Star Meat Delivery Inc. has disputed the claim of falsification, stating the establishment number was “legitimately reserved” during an ongoing USDA application process. Consumers are urged to discard the products or return them to the place of purchase.
