Star Ocean: The Second Story R launches on Nintendo Switch 2

Square Enix announced that the remastered RPG Star Ocean: The Second Story R is now available for the Nintendo Switch 2, with the launch date set for 16 July 2026. The version adds a 2.5 D visual style that blends modern 3D environments with classic 2‑D pixel art, offers both original and rearranged soundtracks, and provides voice tracks in English and Japanese, including new recordings for the Japanese dub.

The release includes quality‑of‑life upgrades such as fast travel, streamlined skill and item menus, and other comfort features. The Switch 2 edition is exclusive to the newer hardware and does not support save‑data transfer from the earlier Switch version. The game joins other platform releases on the original Switch, PS4, PS5 and PC, giving new and returning players a refreshed way to experience the 1998 title.
