Square Enix launches Star Ocean: The Second Story R for Nintendo Switch 2

Square Enix announced a surprise launch of the 2.5D remake *Star Ocean: The Second Story R* on Nintendo Switch 2. The version runs at 1080p and 60 fps in both docked and handheld modes, a notable upgrade from the original Switch’s 30 fps and lower resolution. It is priced at $49.99 with no upgrade path for owners of the Switch 1 version and no save‑data transfer.

The game retains the original and a newly rearranged soundtrack, and offers Japanese and English text and voice options, including the original cast and the cast from the PSP *Second Evolution* version. Quality‑of‑life improvements include fast travel, streamlined skill, specialty and item‑creation menus, and the Private Actions system that influences relationships and multiple endings. The release coincides with the franchise’s 30th anniversary, and Square Enix is running limited‑time discounts of up to 70 % on other Star Ocean titles across platforms.

*Star Ocean: The Second Story R* is now available on Nintendo Switch 2, the original Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC via Steam, and will appear on the GOG store on 28 July.
