Star Trek: Strange New Worlds director addresses episode controversy

Director Axelle Carolyn has addressed fan criticism regarding the divisive horror-themed episode ‘The Griffin Incident’ from the fourth season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. In an interview with TrekMovie, Carolyn acknowledged the backlash from longtime fans who sought clearer scientific explanations for the mysteries introduced in the episode, such as the disappearance of the USS Griffin and the introduction of the secretive Division 12.

Carolyn defended the creative choice to leave certain questions unanswered, stating that Star Trek does not need to solve every mystery within a standard 50-minute runtime. She noted that leaving some mysteries unexplained can highlight the concept of things being ‘bigger than us.’

The fourth season of the series premiered on Paramount+ on July 23, 2026, and currently holds a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The season consists of 10 episodes, with the most recent installment, ‘Human Best Friend,’ airing on August 6.
