Star Trek: Strange New Worlds explores character origins and uses puppetry

The latest episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, titled “Off-Hour,” explores the origins of Montgomery Scott’s reputation as a legendary engineer. The episode depicts the crew facing a “slipstream wormhole” that threatens to destroy the Enterprise. Scotty must use his technical skills and scientific knowledge to restore power after the ship's deuterium becomes irradiated.

In a significant stylistic departure for the franchise, the series has also embraced puppetry. Through a collaboration with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, an episode features the crew being reconstituted as Muppets following a transporter accident. Showrunner Henry Alonso Myers noted that the production focused on ensuring the use of puppets still felt consistent with the Star Trek brand.
