Star Trek: Strange New Worlds faces declining ratings amid genre experiments

The fourth season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is approaching its conclusion, marked by both creative experimentation and declining audience approval. The season finale, titled ‘Tomorrow’s Enterprise’, is expected to involve time travel and may feature the USS Enterprise under the command of Captain James T. Kirk.

Despite the show's high production values, the series has faced significant criticism from fans regarding its use of ‘gimmick’ episodes. Producers have defended these unconventional choices—which include episodes exploring genres like horror, musical, or fantasy—stating they aim to live up to the ‘Strange’ in the series title.

This creative direction has coincided with a sharp decline in viewer sentiment. On Rotten Tomatoes, audience scores for the fourth season have dropped to 34%, a significant decrease from the 81% approval seen in the first season. This decline places the series' current reception on par with Star Trek: Discovery, which holds some of the lowest user ratings in the franchise.
