Paramount+ plans future of Star Trek franchise
The Star Trek franchise is approaching a transitional period as current series, including Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy, approach their conclusions by 2027. Paramount+ executives have confirmed that the studio is actively seeking the next iteration of the franchise to avoid a production gap.
Jane Wiseman, Executive Vice President and Head of Originals at Paramount+, stated that the company is in discussions with writers and working closely with CBS Studios to determine the future creative direction. The hiring of Chris Parnell, a noted franchise fan, is seen as a key component of this strategy.
In addition to television developments, Paramount Pictures is working on a new Star Trek film. This project is being written and directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley.
Separately, recent episodes of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds have explored experimental themes, including a collaboration with The Jim Henson Company for a puppet-themed episode and plot developments involving the legendary Mind Scanner weapon.
