Star Trek to undergo complete cinematic reboot with new characters

Paramount is preparing a complete reboot of the Star Trek film franchise. Directors and writers John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein confirmed at SDCC 2026 that the upcoming production will feature an entirely new cast of characters, moving away from established figures like Kirk or Spock.

The film aims to explore the institution of Starfleet, examining both its positive and negative aspects. The creators noted that while the story will not be cynical or nihilistic, it will acknowledge that bad actors can impact the institution and its values.

Daley and Goldstein cited the films ‘Training Day’ and ‘Crimson Tide’ as stylistic inspirations. The narrative is intended to take place almost in real time, offering a fresh perspective on the franchise without abandoning its core fundamentals. The project is designed so that viewers do not require extensive knowledge of previous films or series to understand the story.
