Stara Zagora hosts ‘Star Trek’ astronomy and orientation event
Approximately 80 participants, including students from grades I to XII, parents, and teachers, took part in the ‘Star Trek’ initiative held in Metropolit Methodiy Kusev Park (Ayazmoto). The event combined nature orientation with astronomical learning.
Led by Professor Alexey Stoev, director of the Yuri Gagarin Astronomical Observatory, the group completed a 4-kilometer route through the forested area of the park. Participants used compasses and topographic maps to navigate from the ‘Frogs’ fountain toward the St. Theodore Tyron chapel. During the trek, Professor Stoev provided lessons on the history of navigation and how humans used celestial bodies and natural signs like moss to find direction.
The journey concluded at the Yuri Gagarin Astronomical Observatory, where participants engaged in outdoor activities. The session included learning about major constellations, how to determine time and direction using bright stars, and observing celestial objects through a telescope.
