Bulgarian Food Safety Agency reports multiple seizures and disease outbreaks

The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) has reported several significant food safety and veterinary incidents across the country.

In Varna, authorities seized approximately 38 tons of peanuts originating from the US and Egypt due to excessive aflatoxin levels. The US shipment faces destruction or specialized EU-approved processing, while the Egyptian shipment is slated for processing as animal feed in the Netherlands.

Multiple outbreaks of sheep and goat scab have been identified in the Stara Zagora, Blagoevgrad, and Haskovo regions. In Stara Zagora, four outbreaks have triggered the establishment of protective and surveillance zones, including restrictions on animal movement. In Blagoevgrad, a primary outbreak involving 67 animals has led to similar containment measures. In Haskovo, a secondary outbreak was reported in a facility with 12 sheep.

Additionally, inspectors in Haskovo confiscated over one ton of expired dairy products, including mozzarella and cottage cheese, to prevent them from entering the market. In another instance, the BFSA intercepted 720 kilograms of tea from China at the Port of Varna after finding prohibited and excessive levels of pesticides.
