Starbucks faces US pressure over new Xinjiang locations

Starbucks is facing political pressure in the United States following the opening of its first cafes in the Xinjiang region of China. The company recently opened two locations in Urumqi, situated at the Grand Bazaar and the international airport.

John Moolenaar, Chairman of the House Select Committee on the CCP, has called for the immediate closure of these stores. He described the expansion as ‘shocking and morally bankrupt,’ arguing that the presence of an iconic American brand in the region links the company to the Chinese government’s treatment of the Uyghur Muslim minority.

This expansion follows a significant restructuring of Starbucks’ Chinese operations earlier this spring, during which the company sold a 60 percent stake in its retail business to the Hong Kong-based investment firm Boyu Capital, while retaining 40 percent ownership.
