Starbucks denies plans to acquire Chipotle Mexican Grill

Starbucks has officially denied reports that it is planning to acquire Chipotle Mexican Grill, ending intense market speculation regarding a potential multibillion-dollar deal in the restaurant sector.

The rumors gained momentum following a report by the Financial Times, which suggested Starbucks had been working with financial advisers to explore a takeover of the burrito chain. A deal would have reunited Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol with Chipotle, the company he led for six years prior to joining Starbucks in 2024.

A Starbucks spokesperson stated, “As a matter of policy, we don’t comment on rumors and speculation, but we want to be clear we are not buying Chipotle.” The company emphasized that it remains focused on its “Back to Starbucks” turnaround strategy, which aims to improve customer experience and operational efficiency.

Following the denial, market reactions were immediate: Chipotle shares fell significantly, while Starbucks shares saw gains. Analysts noted that a merger of this scale, involving companies with different business models, would have faced significant financial and strategic hurdles.
