Starbucks explores potential acquisition of Chipotle Mexican Grill

Starbucks has reportedly explored a potential acquisition of Chipotle Mexican Grill, according to reports from the Financial Times. If the deal were to proceed, it would represent one of the largest acquisitions in the history of the restaurant industry, potentially surpassing Burger King’s 2014 purchase of Tim Hortons.

Chipotle has a market capitalization of approximately $39 billion. Following the news, Chipotle shares rose as much as 8%, while Starbucks shares saw declines of up to 6.7% due to concerns regarding the financial burden and potential distractions from its current turnaround strategy.

The possible merger would reunite Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol with the burrito chain he led for six years before joining Starbucks in 2024. While the move could create a massive food and beverage entity with combined annual sales estimated at $50 billion, some analysts have expressed skepticism regarding the operational synergies between a coffee-focused chain and a fast-casual Mexican grill.

In response to the reports, a Starbucks spokesperson stated that the company is “laser-focused” on executing its “Back to Starbucks” strategy and does not comment on rumors or speculation.
