Starbucks sees shift as Gen Z favors customizable cold drinks
Generation Z consumers are driving a significant shift in beverage preferences, favoring highly customizable cold drinks over traditional hot coffee. At Starbucks, three out of every four drinks sold are now cold beverages, including iced fruit drinks, protein shakes, and specialty concoctions like ‘dirty sodas’.
Market analysts suggest this trend is rooted in a desire for personalization and control. While Gen Z remains price-sensitive, they are often willing to pay a premium for drinks that offer visual appeal, functional benefits, or a sense of being ‘special’. Experts note that for younger consumers, these beverages serve as a form of self-expression and identity signaling, similar to fashion choices.
Marketing experts also highlight the role of social media and brand image in this shift. The visual nature of layered, colorful cold drinks makes them highly shareable on platforms like TikTok, helping brands maintain a premium status through perceived ‘affordable luxury’.
