Starbucks tests AI technology for drive-thru ordering

Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol announced that the company is preparing to test AI-powered models to assist with drive-thru ordering. The initiative aims to help baristas record orders more accurately and efficiently, allowing staff to focus more on customer interaction and beverage preparation.

The technology is intended to structure orders in real time, reducing the need for manual notes and clarifying customer intentions, such as size changes or specific modifications. Additionally, Starbucks is researching identification technology that could recognize customers upon arrival to present personalized digital menus and simplify the payment process.

While other major chains like McDonald’s have tested similar systems to save labor hours, Starbucks noted that these developments are currently in the early stages. The company plans to test and refine these solutions before any widespread implementation.
